We had pretty good school lunches- mostly homemade main dishes, with canned vegetables and fresh fruit and a cookie most of the time, IIRC. My favorite was mashed potatoes with hamburger gravy. I think it was 25 cents, but you got 5 days for a buck, because I remember mom giving us each a dollar on Monday to get a weeks worth of tickets. Don't know if they had a free lunch program, because even though we would surely have qualified (starving dairy farmers- I'm sure we never had a net income for tax purposes), my dad would have never applied for it. Proud man, never took something for nothing.
