Run a 195F stat. Most old machines have suffered the Bubba treatment with the stat being removed and tossed. There is some perverse idea out there that is too hot is "bad", then colder is "better". Cold engines suffer increased bore wear, increased lube oil dilution,fouled plugs and wasted fuel which exits the stack as HC and CO. What viscosity is the air filter oil? There must be a fill line on the oil cup somewhere. It would not be the 1st time that the air intake system was plugged somewhere between the inlet and the exit of the filter. How much oily mud is stuck from bottom to top of the mesh?
