Because somebody sold you a problem tractor they could not or would not repair.
The sparks are high current because you are closing a low resistance current path that should not exist.
As previously stated. Sooner or later you will blowup the battery and fill your face with sulphuric acid. I'll wager a bet that you were not wearing safety glasses during the sparking.
Find out where the short is or if as previously stated the starter contacts maybe welded closed. High current from a 12V conversion can do that.
