I have the repair manual for a 1984 Jeep Cherokee. The most common engine was the 2.8 V6, (171 cid). They also offered a 2.64L I4, 150 cid. Then they also had a 2.1 Turbo Diesel. 128 cid. The other engines could be paired up to a 5 speed manual or the 3 speed automatic. The 2.46L I4 had a 4 speed manual as an option.
The Diesel only had a 5 speed manual. No other option. Not available in California.
So my short answer is yes, it can be done. Used to be some farmers near Gilead, NE who had a diesel pickup back in the early 80's. Can't remember which engine it had in it.
