We had bad problem last year when a barn cat got in the house while we were on vacation. the thing that worked real well for us on the dogs was "Capstar". It's a pill that seems pretty benign to the dogs, but the fleas start dying and dropping off the dog within a bout a half hour. Of course you still have to make sure to eradicate them everywhere or the dogs will just get infested, but for the dogs themselves: Capstar.
