The pennies you used in your "experiment" were 97.5% ZINC with a very thin copper plating on them. Back in 1982, the US mint stopped using the full copper planchets for stamping out pennies due to the high cost of copper. Currently, there is more copper in any other coin than in a penny. Even a nickel is 75% copper. A dime is 8-1/3% nickel and the balance is copper. All other formerly silver coins have a similar composition as the dime.
I suggest that if you want to test the effectiveness of copper, you might want to use ANY OTHER coin than a penny, or use a penny dated previous to 1982.
