we have a minature pony here. he will bully the crap out of the cows and they are afraid of him. Yet we had a cow have twins in the pasture the other day and that pony was standing guard over one of the calves and was very protective of the calf. I picked up the calf to carry it to the barn and the pony was very concerned about how I was handling the calf. He paced me right into the barn and he was nuzzling the calf all the way. Once I laid the calf down and he decided the calf was fine, he just headed back into the pasture. You just never know with critters.
