The 896 and 896A are the oldest of the lot. They were designed as economy rakes and have bushings only in the tooth bars instead of bearings. As the bushing wears it allows the tooth bar to drag back and not do a good job of raking. The rear axle is straight which also is not as good as the later offset axles. The 640 rake is the next step newer and is a very good rake. The 660/670 rakes replaced the 640 with the 670 being the larger of the two. Besides the color the main difference from the 640 is the tooth pitch adjustment at the front of the rake. The 640 has a series of holes where the 660/670 has a slot. Hope this helps. Mike
