I have not done a gear box on a NH 492 but have done them on the NH 488 and NH 489. If I remember correctly it was around a .005-.007 preload on the bearings.
I deliberately set them lose and measured the free pay/end travel. Then took out that amount plus the .005-.007.
The companies are making good money selling remanufactured parts. Plus many of today's techs are just parts replacers anymore.
Truthfully that gear case is real similar to the sickle drive box on the JD flex platforms or the JD 1209-1219 Mo-Cos. Have your JD dealer print you the adjustment page for one of those gear cases an it should be close enough.
