We have a very good electrical repair place near us in Flackville NY. I asked about running a 220 Birdsell buzzbox off a 5000 watt genset. I wa told not to even try it, that the genset didn't ahve the guts or the wiring to take that type of load. When I got my 25Kw PTO alternator, I asked the same question and was told I'd be fine since the unit is much heavier duty with a lot more power. My impression as an electrical idiot is that it's not so much a matter of power as of the quality of the small 3-8Kw windings or what ever is in there holding the magic smoke in place. They aren't built for that type of load IOW.
That's all I know about it.
