I borrowed a Shaver and used it for a few years. I'm not sure what can break on something like that, but I also was aware it wasn't MINE and I couldn't afford to replace it if I broke it. I did replace some of the rubber bumpers that were worn out. Putting in several hundred posts each year with it, I'd say a dollar to $1.50 a post is fair. But that's based on my area putting 4"-6", occasionally 10" cedar posts in heavy clay. If the guy wants to put in rail road ties in granite or steel posts in sand it might change.
If it's not someone you know well and trust, I'd get a contract and check my insurance. People are sue happy these days.
