About 40 years ago a friend (about 12 years younger) as part of a High School Project helped build and test fire a full scale reproduction of a Civil War cannon complete with gun carriage. They got all of the necessary permits and permissions and trailered it out to a Dry Lake bed near Edwards Air Force Base in the Mojave Desert. They loaded it up and fired an 8 pound Shot-put ball about 4 miles. They filmed everything on 8 mm ; Then hauled the cannon back where they filled the Breech with 100 pounds of molten Lead. When it cooled off, they cross drilled it horizontally & vertically about 6 inches back from the Muzzle and installed steel bars which were then welded to the Barrel. The Cannon now sits on permanent display in front of the High School.
