Just because it is something you haven't seen before, and doesn't have shiny new paint on it, doesn't make it a death trap. Yes it looks crude. Beyond the tractors, EVERYTHING on the farm looked crude in the 1950's. Form followed function, and a lot of implements were completely new inventions at the time.
Realistically, I don't think that thing is strong enough to tip the tractor over. It will bend or break away long before that happens.
