I was in a situation like that in the Marine Corps when I worked in nuclear weapons.
I was single at the time, and was the only man in the Staff NCO quarters who had his own private telephone with the Corps paying the bill. No one else in the building could figure out why, nor did they ever find out.
A neighbor of my parents told me after the fact that two men appeared one day, identified themselves as FBI agents, and began asking all sorts of questions about me. The neighbor had two sons in the military, so he assumed what it was about.
I can still hear an Air Force Captain at an orientation session saying "Gentlemen, without your knowledge, for the last six months to a year you've been under intense investigation. Right now the FBI knows more about you than you know yourself. And, trust me, the KGB knows as much as the FBI". Comforting thought.
I could talk about it now, since it's been over 50 years, but I don't. Mostly 'cause no one would believe me anyway, they'd just think I was spreading BS.
