Actually back when SS started the retirement age was 1 year past the average life expentency. To maintain the system as "designed" the retirement age should be 73 - but instead a majority of Americans are now retiring at age 62 - even YOUNGER than they were retiring 80 years ago when a majority of Americans made a living doing stoop labor.
