That is casting date of the engine.5*17*Z stands for May,17,1954.That means the engine is a replacement engine if what you have is truley an M.Or you could have a SMTA!Look on the trans houseing,just 'under' the brake pedals.You should find a similar date code.Count backwards from Z/54 to determine the year.IH used a casting code on major castings. 1939 (I think)started with 'A'. and they worked up from there with a letter a year.When they got to 'Z',they started over with A again. If I am wrong with this,someone WILL correct me!
