detonation -knock have been the end of many engines yet anything and everything else gets blamed. detonation is caused by cheap low octane fuel,lean mixture,over advanced timing, sooted up combustion chambers from too rich a mixture and too cool of operation. detonation causes peak combustion chamber pressures 2-3 times design pressure. This blows head gaskets , cracks castings, breaks rings, scores cylinder walls . The extra pressure will also flatten rod bearings or friction weld the rod to the crank. The rod breaks and punches a hole in the block. The extra pressure And thrust will also snap the crank.
