PED is fatal to newborn pigs. Older pigs and hogs will get sick for a few days but recover. If you have a couple of backyard feeder pigs, chances are they either won't get it or they will be able to shake it off.
Word is, dirt pigs are less likely to get PED than are concrete pigs. However, I do have one pen (6 pigs around 100 lbs. each) that have/had some sort of diarrhea. I hit them with tetracycline and they're acting much more frisky now.
