I have it's twin brother in the Chevrolet Silverado version. I really like it. Drives great, pulls good and great ride. The long wheelbase makes them go down the road nice, but they are a pain in a tight parking lot as the turning radius is huge.
If it has the 7.4 Vortec(454)gas engine and 4L80-E auto trans it will get about 13 on the highway empty, but the good part is it won't get much worse than that loaded, but it will pull good. I get 10 to 12 loaded pulling hard in the CO mountains pulling a 21 foot day cruiser boat and the truck loaded with enough supplies for a week trip on Lake Powell in Utah. Mine won't get 14 going down hill with the key off.
Check the gearing in the axles. The 4:10 is about the best if you are going to pull. Some had 3:73 and while they would cruise good they lacked on pull in the hills. You could also get them with 4:56 gears. They pull good, but no top end even with the OD 4L80-E trans. 80 MPH and they are rung out and that big block is screaming. It's sweet spot is 2,800 to 5,000 RPM. The 4L80-E trans is tough. Basically a TH400 with an overdrive unit. Pretty solid. Keep the fluid clean and they will go a long time. Check to see if it has a sway bar on the rear axle. Mine didn't come with one and the body roll was nasty. I put one on and it made a huge improvement.
Front brakes are too small as most 1 ton trucks are. If you feel a pulsation in the break peddle or the steering wheel wobbles when braking don't even fiddle with turning rotors. Just change them and put a good ceramic pad on it and that will be the end of that issue.
Check the door hinges. I have replaced pins and bushings a couple of times. They are not the best design and wear out quick.
That's about it from my experiences. Overall pretty decent. If it is a diesel I couldn't tell you. I do know that they were just ok, but not great. The Ford and Dodge I think were a better diesel package.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
