My Uncle Gordon was a Merchant Marine officer during most of WW2. He was the chief engineer on several ships, and I think all his duty was in the Pacific. After the war, he went to work for Kaiser Aluminum, but kept his "papers" up. At Kaiser, every so many years, they allowed employees an extra long vacation, I think 10 weeks. During several of these long vacations, Uncle Gordon went back to sea (and I understand made a LOT of money doing so). The last part of Gordon"s career at Kaiser, he ran the boiler room at the local plant, which was mostly what he did in the Merchant Marine. After he retired from Kaiser, he worked in the boiler room at a hospital.
Gordon wouldn"t talk much about his time in the Merchant Marine. I know they were involved in supply missions in various actions, but I never heard the details. I do know that he met his wife during that time and she was a WAVE officer.
Gordon passed about 15 years ago. He was a great guy and interesting to visit with. I sure miss him!
