We had a neighbor who was a WW1 vet. He only talked about it once. He said one of the duties he was assigned to was to retrieve the dead from a battlefield. Sometimes it wasn't safe to go out there for several days. He said he never forgot the smell. He wasn't married but after he passed away at 97 years old I found out he was married when he was shipped out. While he was at war his bride died in childbirth and it hurt him so bad he never considered dating or marriage again.
Last Saturday I was reading a local newspaper dated 1924. One news article told about a WW1 vet who killed his wife, child and himself. The article claimed he was mentally ill from his experiences in the war.
