When I young we rented a small farm from an old fellow that had a hand dug well. Every time I went up there the owner always made you come in the house and have a cup of coffee with him. One day I went there and he asked me to help him with the well. It wasn't pumping very well. He thru off the some of the planks covering it. There were rats, snakes, and quite a few unrecognizable animals floating in it. Needless to say never ate or drank anything there again. On the plus side I never got sick from his water.
