I had one way back in the day, and the saddle between counter weights broke. Neighbor and I came to the conclusion that the thing was pressed together, and that there didn't appear to be any reasonable way to get it apart without ruining it. So we got the pieces in position to weld, insulated the opening of the housing with rubber so the rod wouldn't short out, got the rod in position, and turned on the welder. I got a pretty good "do" on it, and it was still working fine when I sold it.
