We've been using the salt trick for 2 or 3 years now. It DOES keep the weeds and grass out, and the asparagus seems to LIKE it as well. A healthy dose of fertilizer is also very beneficial. We use 10-20-20 because that is what's available at the farm store. We finally got our small patch to produce MORE than we can eat in just one meal.
As to when to apply the salt? Depends on where you live I guess. Nothing has even started growing here, so not much point in doing it yet. On the other hand, what would it hurt?
