Not all computers with 8 are the same. All depends on how it's set-up. As to compatibility with programs? There are plenty of Windows 7 programs that will NOT work with is and some that do. Just had to get my wife a new laptop with Windows 8 and found out that Microsoft Office Suite would not work. It was version 2005. Found out we had to find version 2007 or newer to work on 8. Same problem with our Corelle photo-editing program. Paintshop Pro Photo II worked fine with Winddows 7 but would not work with Windows 8. Had to go and buy Paintshop Pro X5 to work on 8. Also - Windows 7 supports POP email. Windows 8 has NO support for POP email servers. That was a another problem we had to deal with.
