If the armature is removed and you place one ohmmeter lead on the steel shaft and run the other lead across the copper commutator segments THERE SHOULDNT BE ANY CIRCUIT CONTINUITY (ie open circuit) or else an armature winding is shorted out. The commutator needs to be smooth and even and the mica segments between each segment need properly undercut to avoid brush bounce. If all that is present and the brushes held down there shouldnt be exces spaRKING.
