Versatiles of that era were the cheapest to own, to run, and the easiest to work on. Plus the Cummins 855 is going to have way more low end torque then the JD 466. Problem is you are going to sacrifice some comfort and usability with them. The crash box tranny on those are not the easiest transmission to use. They were basically designed to be left in one gear all day long. Hydraulics are open center and just adequate enough to lift a plow. Not like the closed center system on a JD. If all you will be doing it tillage the 835 will be fine.
