I have heard that it is just about impossible to buy coal around Spokane anymore. Funny, since there are long coal trains that pass through almost every day. It used to be that most of the fuel companies had coal yards and would deliver coal in whatever size you needed, but with reduced demand, I guess they all have quit. There was a company North of Spokane that had some that they sold mostly for blacksmithing, but supposedly they bought their last train car of coal and then the branch line was removed.
When I was a kid, we heated our farmhouse mostly with a wood and coal kitchen range. We mostly burned wood during the day, but would use a lot of coal at night, since it would stay pretty hot until morning. My Dad and I would go to the coal yard in our GMC farm truck in the Fall and would hand load a couple of tons of pieces of coal that were the right size. The coal didn"t cost much at all obtaining it that way, and it was a whole lot more convenient than trying to produce enough firewood for the same heat value.
I sure have missed having a wood and coal kitchen range. But with my Wife"s asthma, I suppose I wouldn"t be able to use one these days, even if I had it. And I guess I don"t miss the mess the wood, coal and ashes caused.
