The way I understand it, ISO refers to the viscosity. ISO is a more standardized way of measuring the viscosity. If you pull up a viscosity chart, you will find a wide variety of measuring viscositys, there's SAE, gear oil, etc., then ISO.
The prefix, AW or RO refers to an additive package.
AW is anti wear, it has a zinc additive, or extreme pressure additive, good for sliding motion, like hypoid gears. However, it supposedly is detrimental to brass and bronze.
RO is a rust and oxidation additive. Good for cold gear boxes that tend to collect moisture.
Which do you use? Whatever the manual calls for, if available. If not, weigh the differences. I've mixed and matched and really haven't had a true lubrication failure.
