It's a whole different world though. It's called economy of scale I believe. As recent as the early to mid 70s when I hauled milk,full time farmers would raise one or two Holstein bull calves and fatten them in a pen in the barn for extra money to pay their property taxes. A few acres of wheat for some straw for bedding and a little more income to pay for wind and fire insurance. A few hogs to butcher and an extra one or two for a little money for a short vacation or Christmas money. The milk check from 16 cows provided a pretty good living when it came to everything else. Not many families making a living that way anymore.
