In 1955 Chevy debuted their production V8 in a car. It was a 265 cui. The 283 didn't come along until 57 with fuel injection optional.
That 307 was a horrible engine. No power what so ever. I had one in my 55 belair and tried to blow it up several times. It kept on ticking, but it didn't have any power at all. Now my belair sports a 500 HP 355 :)
