Sales were so abysmal that Chevy considered dumping the Corvette. Then Ford came out with the Thunderbird, which was a huge success. Chevy only kept the 'Vette to keep pace with Ford, which it never did. The Thunderbird outsold the 'Vette by orders of magnitude. The 'Vette was so tied to the 'Bird that they considered making it a four seater when The 'Bird went that way.
