Used old lawn mower handles, sawed a 3/ 8 bolt in two, welded a piece of rod between the pieces to get the right length. Put washers on the ends and put a short piece of pipe over the bolt with washers on each end. What is needed is something to keep the ends from catching on something after most of the wire is unwound. Relatives used two ends from planter wheels. I have used plywood, but it wears out quickly.
