We had the combination hog and cattle waters mounted of a pit in the ground. We filled the tanks for the wick type burners every night with kerosene. One burner under each waterer. We all know what kerosene smells like and if you over filled the tank it might catch the burner on fire and ruin the wick, then the wick had to be changed out for a new one and those cost money. A deep pit say 15 feet meant fewer freeze up.
