As you said-no shortage of, well, lets say lack of knowledge. Back in the fifties, when a lot of service stations had above ground tanks, the daily heat and cool cycle caused them to condense moisture, thus the invention of Heet. Water is heavier than gasoline and settles, then freezes, in the lowest point of the fuel line. Heet will actually travel down (heavier than gas, too) the fuel line and 'melt' the ice water. It was a Godsend when it first came out. Nowadays with fuel pumps in the tank and 10% gasoline and especially underground storage tanks, Heet has become pretty much useless.
