If it is a 1954 it is an NAA if 53 a Jubilee. That said make sure you have a good blue/white spark that will jump a 1/4 inch gap. Next make sure the air cleaner is not full of solid water as in ice since if it is you have a choke problem since it will be choked off all the time. If it floods then you holding the choke to long or the spark is weak or maybe your plugs need to be replaced. Most say to use auto lite 437s
