Because what your dollar in 2008 was worth is worth 10% or more less today. You have to add that in. $1000.00 in 2008 would be only $850 or 900.00 today, so the value of what you bought in 08 rises that much in addition to general price increases. And I'm not talking just inflation, I'm talking about the purposeful devaluation of our currency by the Fed. QE1, QE 2 etc. They bought back our debt by printing more money, lots more money, which devalues the dollar above and beyond inflation.
