How can you unequivocally state that no 401K accounts went down 80%? do you have a crystal ball? some went down more than 80% because it depends on how the funds were invested, just like many funds have not done as well in 2013 because they were not Tech heavy. But O.K., even 50% -- I have a 401 since 1987 when my company first offered it and a TRASOP account for 12 years previous to that, the 401k lost more than half of its value between mid 08 and March of 09, now it is back to where it was in march of 09 plus a relatively modest growth on the funds contributed since March of 09, keeping in mind that much of that is the employer matching of 6%, my point is this, when will I ever regain what the gains could have been if the market had not crashed and the answer is never. I am not against 401 K's, IRA's or stock market investments in general, I just do not and will not have all of my eggs in one basket. No one knew or could guarantee that the market would have rebounded, I know people who were at retirement age when it went south and they were unable or unwilling to retire at the time and wound up working 4-5 extra years, that is time they will never get back, retirement will be pretty miserable if a person waits until they are no longer able to motivate and do what they want to. There is absolutely no guarantee that the market won't crash again tomorrow, as a matter of fact if the FED follows through in their pledge to back off printing money the market will go down, maybe not crash but it will go down with less money available overall. To argue that firearms and precious metals are not viable investments is preposterous, there is a lot more history proving the worth of those commodities then there is of the stock market and they offset one another in the modern age. Land and cattle have been jam up investments the last several years and cattle at least, will continue to be for a few more year and then the cycle will turn the other way.

Today's Featured Article - Seeing an Old Friend - by Joe Evans. Dad had a concrete contracting business starting in 1960. One of his first pieces of equipment was a Ferguson TO-35 with a Davis loader. Dad replaced the TO-35 with a MF 202 Workbull, essentially an industrialized Ferguson 35 I am told. Dad bought the 202 new in 1962, and I recall quite clearly going to the dealer with him to sign for it. ... [Read Article]
