We know what you mean about the remaining dog being depressed. When we put our 14 1/2 year old lab down a few years ago, the 9 year old husky mix did that, wouldn"t eat or drink at all, just moped around. We finally got another dog for HER as we were not really ready for another dog yet but didn"t want to lose the husky too. She did come around with the help of the new younger dog. As to the op"s problem, I agree with the likelihood of tooth problems as we have been there before too.
