We have both a 479 and 489. Only used the 489 for one year so far. Does a nice job. The head appears to float nicer, but I don"t notice any difference in the actual cut quality. The 489 has an SCH knife system on it. Only difference I notice is that the SCH system costs a little more to replace parts on. Both give next to no trouble. Just replace the occasional section and guard. I much prefer the 479/488 design. I"m just waiting for the 489 sickle gearbox to blowup. The 479 just cuts and cuts and cuts. Sickle belts are a b!tch to replace on the 479, never had to do it on a 489. So overall both have been VERY good for us, but the 489 gear box scares me.
