Where do you have the tractor split? By your questions it sounds like it is split between the clutch housing and transmission. It will not come out that way as a unit. Need to split at engine and clutch housing, then remove the clutch operating housing and clutch valve (clutch valve and nipples first). Remove the hi-lo shift fork from it's shaft and remove the short output shaft from inside the unit with a hooked wire. Then the hi-lo can be removed as a unit from the tractor. You could possibly disassemble the unit from the rear but it would be tricky getting it all back together in a vertical position. I have never tried it that way.
