Well we had ours a couple of weeks ago. Glaze ice on the roads. Regardless the power company and other companys that came in to assist worked day and night.
We have a couple of acquaintances that work for our COOP and they worked around the clock, just came home for a shower and something to eat, fresh clothes and out again. We had flickers down into the night indicating that they were out there in the sleet and icy roads and darkness trying to get our "modern conveniences" back on line.
We were without 4 days and had the generators which helped. Didn't have a lot of gas so I used them sparingly. Good part was the community water system stayed on line and that really was nice and having the gen we could surf the net periodically and that helped. I learned as a kid about survival and as a result my main heating unit is a wood stove and there is supplemental zone heating, hot water, and cook stove on Propane. Only thing about those appliances that require electricity was the sparker that lights the cook stove....but that's what propane fire starters are for.
As far as getting out on the ice to go and help someone else I made up my mind that I wasn't. Within shouting distance of my farm were 5 vehicles either in the ditch or blocking the road. We have county facilities that are equipped to handle situations like that and they did.
