Hi, you do not change the starter. I have converted a couple over to 12 volts, did not make any change. The other thing I might mention is I have not came across a 12 volt starter for those old tractors, other than one from a newer model that was made as a 12 volt. Everything will work out just great with the starter that is presently on the tractor. Keep in mind that starter's once in a while do require maintance. Cheers, Murray
