I appreciate your sharing this with us. This has been a problem for me for most of my life. Guess I didn't realize that the tire would hold the shape long enough for you to get it mounted. Great idea.
My pet peeve is mounting 8" tires. Swore I wouldn't do it again. Local full service tire store (lawn mowers to 18 wheelers to 300 hp tractors) dismounts and mounts for $6 or free if you buy the tire from them. For that, no way.
I bought a mechanical tire changer from HF many years ago and welded it to an old 10.00 x 20 split rim wheel and tire. Made a bead breaker out of an 8' piece of C beam, 18" vertical riser, a barn door strap hinge, 8' piece of 2 3/8 drill pipe and a 1 7/8 trailer ball to keep the wheel from sliding. I then took a 1" piece of angle iron and fabricated a circular wedge to fit 16" wheels. Even though I break other sizes, the whole shebang works great for the larger (than 8") tires.
