We got our son a couple of Maine Coon kittens 19 years ago. The male got up to about 18 pounds, I don't think the female was ever over 12 pounds. The male died a few years ago when I drove over him, something I still feel bad about. The female is still with us and may well make it past 20.
The downside of any long-haired cat is, of course, the hair. And the hairballs and vomit that go with it. Maine Coons are otherwise great cats. Very friendly and docile. The males tend to be goofy. Ours would do somersaults when he came to greet our son; very odd to see an 18 pound cat put his head to the floor and flop over onto his back.
Most Maine Coons have a curious habit: they "trill" when they meet you. They'll trill at other animals such as dogs they're friendly with, too. It makes it difficult for them to hide, because they can't help but trill when someone enters a room where they're hiding.
