Well that is a yes no and sort of thing. That is why it is called silicone gasket maker it can be used in place of some gaskets. Yes it does not work well on many but say you have and engine with a bad oil pan gasket you can in fact use it in place of a gasket I know I have done it more then once and never had a problem doing so. Now yes if you use it with a gasket yes you need to use as little as you can just so as to hold the gasket in place and help seal
