I too retired from the military, US Army and moved back to the country. Grew up in the city and moved to the country when I was 16.
I told fellow soldiers when BSing when ask about what living in the "sticks" was like, "well I don't have to tell my wife anything there, the locals will call and tell her long before I can get home". For excitement "go to the gas station in town, drink root beer, play pinball and watch hair grow".
Last year when we had a cow out on the highway a state trooper got out of his car and helped chase it through about a foot of snow on the ground. He could have written me a ticket for the cow getting on the highway but was very nice and helpful.
But you do know your in the country when (these things really have happened here) The house you are renting burns (recent local event, family in town) and within hours a guy with a vacant home offers it free of charge until you get things worked out, others donate money so you can buy new clothing, others donate furniture and such and because the guy was laid off someone took him and his wife out shopping so their kids could have a decent Christmas. The guy also landed a job and in fact had several offers. Or you get sick or are injured and 20 or more farmers show up to till and plant your fields or harvest your crop (I've had the privilege of helping with several of these) . Or you break down in the field and walk to the road (wife wasn't home so no one to call) and a person stops, turns around to take you home well out of their way. You spend more time in the grocery store visiting people than you do shopping. I can go on for hours.......
