I curently use a verizon jet pac too, but the new smart phones are the same thing so you don't need to have a separate unit. I'm looking at new phones now but my current phone will hook to 5 devices just like my jet pack will. They both work great and the new phones you can talk on the phone and use the net as well. As far as data my biggest month last year was 8 gigs, but most were under 5. The 8 gig month was because I use skype to talk to my daughter and she was having some issues that month. 5 is a common number for verizon and will be enough for most people. My current plan has 12 gigs so you can get what ever you want. I got the 12 gig in one of their specials for the same price as 5 gigs. Cost wise you would be best off with a new smart phone, you will get all the same stuff and save the $50.00/mo. for the pack
