Mike, our local scrapper does that with appliances also. He relocated his facility about four years ago, and has a big warehouse where you drop off alum. cans and other alum. Auto radiators, a/c units, etc. But they require that all the refrigerant be removed BEFORE you take it in. So, I guess that gives one a good idea as to what happens to it. On the other hand, they are strict about anything questionable. The other day I carried (among other things)some old automobile radiators. They made me stand beside them while they photographed the radiators and me. They also fingerprint you for certain items.
