Our American-English language is a "living" language. By definition - "living" means word meanings can change and evolve, old words get omitted, new ones get added, etc., &c.
Today - lubricants are often labeled as "motor oil" regardless if petro based, coal based, etc. Besides - the word "oil" does not denote petroleum. Corn oil, Canola oil, whale oil, coal oil, shale oil, etc.
In WWII, Hitler's gang cooked, coked, and/or compressed coal to make what they called "diesel oil" as a substitute for petro-based diesel fuel.
